Welcome back to Nun’s Cross and a very special welcome to our new pupils and parents. The Junior Infants have all settled in very well and following an enjoyable summer, we are looking forward to another busy year here at Nun’s Cross NS.
9.10 Doors open and children get organised in their classrooms
9.30 Teaching begins
1.50 End of school day for Junior and Senior Infants
2.50 End of school day for 1st to 6th Class
Please note that the doors of the school/classrooms do not open until 9.10am. If you arrive before this time you must wait with your child until the doors are opened. Parents of Infants collected at 1.50pm should leave promptly with their children as to avoid any further distraction to classes still ongoing. Furthermore, please be considerate when collecting your children from school. If a teacher is working with her class in the school yard, please wait outside the school gates.
In the mornings, please pull in, drop the children off and move on to let the person behind you “Stop, Drop and Go”. This will greatly alleviate the build-up of traffic in the mornings and encourages independence for the children. If you do need to come into the school, we kindly ask that you are off the premises by 9.30am in order for the teachers to settle the children and begin the school day. Please keep the space outside the school car park free so that staff have access to the staff car park. As the children are settled now, we would encourage you to allow them to walk independently from the school gate to their classrooms. This will certainly help with the build-up of traffic and will foster independence and confidence in the children. In the interest of safety for the children, please be reminded to close the gate after you leave.
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Smith and Mrs Jebb back to the school. Congratulations to Miss Byrne who is now a permanent member of staff.
The Family Contribution includes insurance and is now due:
1 child: €150
2 children: €250
3 children: €300
If you pay your Family Contribution by Standing Order, the form is available from the office. Alternatively you can pay on-line. The account details are as follows:
Name: Nuns Cross School Account
If you are paying online, please remember to include the family name as a reference.
Please note if paying by cash, banks are no longer accepting non-sorted coins! If possible all payments should be made by cheque or notes.
Photocopying plus Arts & Crafts Money (€30 per child) is now also due. Please give to Sandra in the office or your class teacher as soon as possible. Thanks to those who have already paid.
Payments to school
When sending in money, please put payment in an envelope with your child’s name and class stating what the money is for on the front.
Absences – Late Arrivals – Early Departures
There is no need to ring the school if your child will not be attending but please supply a note on his/her return to school. The note needs to state the date(s) your child was absent and the reason for the absence. This is a requirement of TUSLA, the Child and Family Agency. If your child is late to school or leaves early, please sign the Early Departures or Late Arrivals form, available from the office.
School Bags and Healthy Lunch Policy
Please make sure your child has everything they need coming to school ie. school books, pens, pencils etc. It is essential that children eat healthily so please fill your child’s lunch box with some of the following: sandwiches, rolls, crackers, fruit, popcorn. If your child has a yoghurt, please make sure he/she has a spoon. Please do not send in hot lunches with your child. A small treat is allowed on a Friday but no chewing gum, crisps, fizzy drinks or lollipops are allowed. All food waste and wrappers are to be brought home in your child’s lunch box.
We are thrilled to have implemented a buddy system in our school. Buddy systems teach, and give children the opportunity to practise the important values of respect, care, valuing difference, responsibility, friendship and including others. Through looking after and caring for smaller, vulnerable children who are just starting school, older children learn the skills associated with empathy and compassion through activities in the classroom and in the playground. This helps combat bullying and other forms of anti-social behaviour such as teasing. Teaching pro-social values and skills can also contribute to the development of resilience, a protective factor for children if they experience hardship or loss. Buddies can enable younger children to feel safe and cared for while older children feel valued and respected which strengthens the school community. It helps nurture a caring ethos in the school.
To avoid the spread of Head Lice, please check your child’s hair on a weekly basis and treat appropriately.
We would kindly ask you not to give out party invitations in school. As you can appreciate, if some children are invited and others aren’t, this can cause upset in the classroom.
Liaising with Teachers
If you need to speak to myself or your child’s class teacher, we are always happy to meet but please ring or email Sandra who will arrange an appointment in advance.
